Movies for my whimsy girls

Whimsical movies just speak to my heart and soul. The more I started consuming film the more I realized how much I LOVE whimsical movies. A lot of these are movies from my childhood that I still adore now as an adult, while others I discovered later in life.

This list is basically movies that shaped me as a person and this is me trying to convince you to watch them. Some are sweet, some are heartbreaking, some are kind of unsettling but they're all tied together with a little bit of magic. These are the films for people who find beauty and comfort in the strange and unusual.

No major spoilers!

Lisa Frankenstein- 2024

Lisa Frankenstein directed by Zelda Williams is an imaginative take into the Frankenstein world. It follows Lisa, a teenage girl in the 80s as she navigates her strange and mysterious life. It brings camp into a classic story, with elements of horror, romance and comedy. It's a film that will inspire and speak to my whimsical girls.

The Shape of Water - 2017

The Shape of Water is one of those movie you'll be thinking about days after watching. Directed by one of my favourite directors, Guillermo Del Toro, who is also behind Pan's Labyrinth (2006) and Frankenstein (2025). He seems to mix real world issues both global and personal with elements of pure fantasy. This is both a sweet romance and troubling story, that's worth a watch!

Coraline- 2009

I can't make this list without putting Coraline in it. Directed by Henry Selick, commonly mistaken for Tim Burton. It takes stop motion to a whole new level. The story follows a girl named Coraline, diving into her world after moving into a new house that seems to be holding a lot of secrets. This movie took around 4 years to make with most of it being made by hand, which means every detail is intentional. This is definitely a film I wish I could watch for the first time again!

Ella Enchanted - 2004

This was quite literally my childhood. It is a whimsical take on a rather deep topic of repression, betrayal, people pleasing, consent and oppression. Starring the gorgeous Anne Hathaway, it has witty humour, a fun adventure, and a truly good message. This one I loved even more as an adult because sooo much went over my head that I appreciate now.

Ponyo - 2008

This is genuinely one of the cutest, most heartwarming, artistic films you'll ever see. I just watched this for the first time a few weeks ago and just fell in love. The one thing I love about anime is how beautiful the art is, I feel like I'm watching art pieces come to life. It gives you great perspective on how lucky we are to be human. It makes you think about the difference between us and animals. Is it our feelings, emotions and communication? Are we truly that different from them? This is a great watch for the whole family or if you want a feel good movie to watch alone.

Bridge to Terabithia - 2007

This movie was my first love and heartbreak as a kid. Truly a beautiful story about acceptance, imagination, and grief. It gives you that nostalgic feeling while somehow also giving you that adult empty feeling. Starring young Josh Hutcherson and Anna-Sophia Robb, they both gave a beautiful performance. I will warn you, once you watch this movie, you'll never be the same. This one is for the people who were creative and lived in their heads as a kid (or maybe even still do).

Pan's Labyrinth - 2006

This Film is a fucking masterpiece. Again directed by Guillermo Del Toro. This film follows a 10 year old girl, Ofelia, who is approached by a mythical creature. Del Toro somehow perfected mixing real deep issues with fantasy. It's unsettling and stressful at times but is so well thought out, and has such bittersweet moments. I truly thought this would be a kids movie but don't be fooled, it's not. It has some truly unsettling parts, but don't worry its not too scary. It has more elements of war, drama and fantasy.

13 going on 30- 2004

This is my all time favourite Rom-Com, there's no competition for me. I personally love fantasy and romance movies and this one mixes both of those genres together perfectly. As a kid I always wanted to be 20, now that I'm 20, I wish I could go back. This movie perfectly encapsulates that feeling. It has such a good lesson that I know a lot of kids, teens and adults can relate to.

But I'm a cheerleader - 1999

This is a gay awakening movie. All I have to say is that RuPaul plays a "straight" coach at a conversion therapy camp. It's both so fucking funny while dealing with the topics of homophobia, loathing, and acceptance. Visually, it's so interesting and relies heavily on the use of colour. A comforting watch with a slightly unnatural feeling, which holds a ton of symbolism for what the story is about! A beautiful story about self acceptance.

Death becomes her - 1992

Absolute iconic movie. The cast is one of my favourite of all time with Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn and Bruce Willis. There is amazing body horror and costuming. It's so incredibly camp and It takes rivalry to a whole other level. I loved the message on how far people will go to reach perfection, because it will always backfire on you. Truly a great movie to watch during Autumn, as it has that dark seedy vibe but isn't too scary.

Willow - 1988

This movie I watched with my mom and just instantly fell in love with it. It definitely has the 80s feeling but there's something so wholesome about this film. It's a truly great watch and just pure fantasy. Starring Warwick Davis (so you know its going to be a great fantasy movie), Val Kilmer and Joanne Whalley as they set on an adventure facing magic of all kinds.

Donkey Skin - 1970

This is for my whimsical weird girls. This French film is truly visually stunning but has a disturbing plot under all of that. A very creative and fantastical movie that has an original feeling mixed in with familiar princess stories. The costuming is probably my favourite of all time, the gowns Catherine Deneuve wears are jaw droppingly beautiful. A fun watch that almost feels like a dream you're stuck in.

About Time - 2013

I haven't watched this one in years but now that I'm thinking about it again I need to rewatch immediately. This is a beautiful story of appreciating life as it is. It's both comforting while making you reflect on your own life in ways you might not have thought of. Now what if you had the ability to change your fate? How would you use it? This movie is romantic, magical, dramatic and just simply a great watch.

The Love Witch - 2016

This film caught my eye as I thought it was an old classic, just to find out it was made in 2016. They somehow managed to replicate the technicolor look and that instantly made me want to watch. This is definitely a film where the vibe is the plot rather than the plot itself. All of my spiritual baddies need to watch this. It follows a witch named Elaine who uses witchcraft to make men fall in love with her. She's truly such a cool character. The makeup, outfits, and setting are simply perfection in my eyes.

Welcome Divas!

You are about to enter my inner voice.

Writing has always been a huge part of my life and something I'm so passionate about, so I thought I'd make a page where I can write about things that make me not only happy but sad, angry, embarrassed, and every other emotion there is (I have mood swings) . I'm doing this because I feel I've been really hiding myself trying to be perfect I forgot its the most human thing  in the world to feel emotions, and how lucky are we for that experience. What I really want is this to feel like my personal diary. With juicy stories, fun lists, reviews on everything, and how I feel in the moment with true honesty.

I LOVE fashion, physical and digital media, drawing, films, journaling, beauty, spirituality, wellness, nostalgia, and music. So if any of these apply to you as well, you might just love it here. I'm also a girl who is learning and trying to grow into the best version of myself. I think it's a great way for me to face things and really reflect, not only from my perspective but others too.

I also do want to be consistent, soooo I'm going to try to post every Sunday. Stay tuned for more!
